“Contrology (Pilates) is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. ” Joseph Pilates
Pilates is a method of exercise that was developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates.
Passionate about fitness, over the years he developed a system of movements and equipment. He felt that it was the key to get everybody (male and female of all ages!) active and healthy. The system works to move the body and spine in ways that develop flexibility, stability and strength in a whole body workout.
The fact that the Pilates method is still so popular after many years while exercise fads come and go is testament to his skill and understanding of the body.
Pilates works the core muscles - which are not only the abdominal muscles, but include the glutes and inner thighs and the muscles in the back - working in synergy. This
"Concentrate on the correct movement each time you exercise, lest you do them improperly and thus lose all the vital benefits." Joseph Pilates
A Pilates session will feel different if you are used to going to the gym. You will have a combination of exercises that incorporate the core and require a lot of control and concentration.
Each exercise is designed to work the whole body, not single muscle groups and requires concentration and control.
We don't use lots of reps as the idea is that you bring all effort to each exercise and get maximum benefit each time. Each class will have similar exercises, such as the Hundreds, Roll up, Roll over and the Series of Five. And though sometimes we use balls and props, they are not an integral part of the Pilates method.
After class you should feel that every inch of you has worked hard and not “rested”! A good teacher doesn’t stay in front and workout with you, they should move around the room adjusting and correcting you.
